Zendaya is having the kind of summer most performers spend a whole career chasing. In the span of a few weeks, the 29-year-old actress married her longtime partner and co-star Tom Holland, walked the world premiere of their fourth Spider-Man film together and pushed her cumulative worldwide box office past $4 billion. For anyone just catching up, here is how a kid from Oakland theater stages became one of the most influential figures in entertainment.
A private wedding, then a London celebration
Zendaya and Holland are married, according to multiple reports. The couple, who confirmed their offscreen romance with a kiss photographed during a Los Angeles drive in July 2021, tied the knot in an intimate ceremony earlier this year. On Aug. 4, they hosted a private wedding celebration at a lavish hotel in England, E! News reported. Two days later, Holland was spotted in London wearing a gold wedding band for the first time.
Stylist Law Roach responded to rumors that the pair might hold a more public second wedding, though no confirmation followed. In the weeks leading up to the “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” premiere, Zendaya teased bridal-themed fashion on the red carpet, wearing “something old, new and borrowed” before finishing the sequence with something blue.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opened in theaters July 31, reuniting Zendaya’s MJ with Holland’s Peter Parker for a fourth time. Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born in Oakland, California. Her name derives from the Shona name Tendai, meaning “to give thanks.” Both of her parents were teachers. Her father, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, is a Black American with Nigerian ancestry; her mother, Claire Stoermer, has German and Scottish heritage. She has five older half-siblings from her father’s previous relationships.
She grew up performing at the California Shakespeare Theater, where her mother worked as a house manager during summers. Her first acting role was a silkworm in her school’s production of “James and the Giant Peach.” By age eight she had joined Future Shock Oakland, a hip-hop dance group, and she later spent two years dancing hula with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts.
