The people who built Teotiwakan left behind 8 square miles of monumental stone architecture and almost nothing to tell us their own name for it.

We do not know what they called their city.

There are no inscriptions carved into the temples announcing a dynasty.

There are no dated monuments recording victories or coronations.

There is no readable writing at all.

At least none that has ever been deciphered.

A civilization of 200,000 people ran a city for 5 centuries and left us no way to hear their voices.

The name we use for it isn’t even theirs.

Teot Wakan is an Aztec [music] word and the Aztecs had nothing to do with building it.

By the time the Aztecs found this place, it had already been dead for 600 years.

Picture that gap for a moment.

6 centuries of silence.

The Aztecs came upon a city larger than any they had ever seen, its avenues buried under drifting soil, its pyramids rising out of the plain like mountains that had been shaped by hands.

No people could have built this.

Only gods could have.

So they called it Teayoti Huakan, which in their language means roughly the place where the gods were created or the place where men become gods.

They walked its ruined avenues as pilgrims, not as [music] descendants.

They collected its artifacts as sacred relics.

To the most powerful empire in Meso America, this abandoned city was already a place of legend, already unknowably old, already a mystery.

Because the truth is that the people who built Teoti Wakan didn’t simply fade away.

Something happened to this city.

And whatever it was, it was violent and it appears to have come from inside.

Sometime in the 7th century, the great temples along the central avenue were burned, not accidentally, systematically.

The sacred images were smashed.

The ritual centers were torched in what archaeologists increasingly read as a deliberate targeted destruction.

The kind of thing a people do to their own gods when something has broken beyond repair.

And then the city emptied.

The population that had made this one of the largest settlements on Earth walked out of it and did not come back.

They left their pyramids standing and their secrets buried.

And for over a thousand years, the ground kept those secrets almost perfectly.

For most of the modern era, archaeologists treated Teayoti Wakan as essentially a surface city.

A grand one, certainly worthy of a century of careful study, but a city you understood by walking its avenues and mapping its platforms.

The idea that there might be another Teayoti Wakan beneath the visible one, an entire architecture hidden below the ground was not something the field readily accepted.

It took a collapse to force the question open.

In 2003, heavy rains came down over the valley, the kind of relentless seasonal downpour that soaks into everything and finds every weakness in the earth.

At the base of the staircase of one of the sight’s most important structures, the Temple of the Fathered Serpent, the ground gave way.

A sinkhole opened where none had been before.

And when researchers from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology went to investigate what should have been a simple drainage problem, they found themselves staring down into something that had no business being there.

Below the pyramid, roughly 60 ft down, there was a cavity, not a natural void in the rock, an artificial one.

He could not have known that the tunnel ran hundreds of feet into the darkness, sloping downward toward [music] a set of chambers that had been sealed since before the fall of the city.

He could not have known about the tens of thousands of objects laid out in the dark in patterns no one had arranged in [music] 18 centuries.

And he certainly could not have known that at the deepest point in the very heart of the mountain of stone he would find pools of a liquid that should not have been there at all.

What Gomez did know in those early days was that the work would be slow and it would be dangerous.

The tunnel had not been designed for visitors.

It had been designed to be forgotten.

The air inside was thick and stale, heavy with the smell of damp earth and something older, something mineral that clung to the back of the throat.

That is the detail that turns the whole discovery over in the mind.

The people who built this tunnel understood enough chemistry to extract a liquid metal from a stone.

And what they chose to do with that hard one substance was not decorate with it, not trade it, not display it.

A river of shining silver metal at the bottom of a tunnel mirroring a ceiling of stars could plausibly represent exactly that.

An underworld river, a threshold, a reflected heaven at the base of the world.

It is a satisfying interpretation, and it may well be correct.

Because if the goal was simply to create a shimmering, reflective, waterlike surface at the sacred heart of the temple, the builders had far easier ways to achieve it.

Actual water would flow and reflect and shine.

Polished pyite, the very same mineral already pressed into the ceiling above, could have been laid across the floor to catch the flame.

Obsidian, the volcanic glass they cut into blades still sharp after 18 centuries, polishes to a mirror so dark and perfect that it was used for exactly that purpose, as a seeing glass elsewhere in Meso America.

Any of these would have produced the reflected sky.

Any of these would have been cheaper, safer, and simpler.

They did not use any of them.

They used mercury.

And they did it at real cost to whoever stood over those fires breathing that air.

That tomb has never been fully opened, and modern soil surveys around the burial mound have detected mercury concentrations far above the natural background, lending real weight to the old description.

And then having burned what they worshiped, the inhabitants sealed the tunnels, packed the descending passages with rubble, buried the mercury and the mirrors [music] and the jade beneath the earth, and walked out of the largest city in the Americas.

And why after 5 centuries of building and maintaining and influencing half of Meso America they burned their gods and buried their secrets and left is unknown.

The instruments will keep looking.

Ground penetrating radar and resistivity surveys do not tire, do not require the removal of a single stone, and get better with each passing year.

And the ground beneath Teayoti Wakan is patient in the way only buried things can be.

Somewhere below the avenue of the dead, in a chamber that may or may not connect to the ones already found, the answer to at least one of these questions is almost certainly waiting, arranged deliberately, sealed carefully, mirror bright in the dark.

The scans have found the doors.

What lies behind most of them has not yet been read.

So the real question is the one the city refuses to answer.

And it is worth sitting with.

A civilization that left us no words, no names, and no explanations, chose liquid mercury, a substance both beautiful and deadly to place at the sacred heart of its greatest temple and did the same thing that a completely unconnected empire on the far side of the world did with the tomb of its first emperor.
