Sydney Sweeney may be one of America’s young Hollywood sweethearts, but in the streaming landscape, even she can’t defeat the action movie powerhouse that is Jason StathamStatham has delivered a blow to the competition and, just days before the release of his latest thriller Mutiny, he has claimed the crown of streaming once again. Never doubt the power of The Stath.

‘Shelter’s Michael Mason Is One of Jason Statham’s Best Characters

Shelter, Statham’s first action thriller of 2026, tells the story of Michael Mason, a former MI6 operative who’s living on a remote island away from his past as an assassin. Mason is forced to take care of Jessie, a teenager he rescued from an accident, but soon after, he’s mistakenly identified as a terrorist. The highly skilled retired agent is forced to flee with Jessie and protect her at all costs as he becomes the target of a relentless manhunt.

First, we’ll address the obvious. Statham’s success and expanding legacy is based on a working formula that doesn’t need any modifications. He’s supposed to play these characters because that’s who viewers want to see thriving. Then again, can the formula still work after some time and endless iterations?

Fortunately, Shelter‘s Michael Mason is much more interesting than some of the previous characters Statham has portrayed. It may be a simple element of age that makes Mason’s arc more compelling, but we have to acknowledge that Statham is arguably better here. He’s not just a mandatory staple in a high-octane plot; there is something urgent and essential about his presence in the movie, and it’s truly hard to imagine someone else playing Mason.

Jason Statham Has Cemented His Place as the Absolute King of Streaming

Shelter was released in January 2026, grossing nearly $54 million against a production budget of $50 million. It was considered a box office flop for Statham — a curious result given how popular the film seems to be with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has an 87% audience score. Overall, Sweeney’s R-rated sensation The Housemaid did much, much better, grossing more than $400 million against a $35 million budget, and earning a 92% audience score. Nonetheless, there can only be one winner and that seems to be Jason Statham.

Despite Shelter suffering a few stumbles in the last few weeks, courtesy of Sweeney’s erotic hit, the action thriller has surged again. According to the latest update in the streaming charts, Shelter has been climbing STARZ‘s charts, and it now sits at No. 3 among the streamer’s most popular movies. It has sailed past The Housemaid, which is now the fourth most streamed title on the platform. The biopic Michael and MMA drama Beast are No. 1 and 2, respectively.

However, Statham’s thriller is also conquering streaming through other platforms. Amazon Prime Video’s global rankings show Shelter at No.4, below Masters of the Universe and Project Hail MaryA Working Man, the action star’s feature from last year, has also remained a fixture on the streaming charts, and currently stands at No. 6 in the Top 10 list of popular titles on MGM+.
