It has been 15 years since Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara took on the iconic roles of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Directed by iconic director David Fincher, the film became an underrated gem, but it couldn’t move forward.
Well, as per Deadline, the novel on which the movie is based is undergoing a second adaptation, but this time in a television series. David Oyelowo (Silo) and Viola Prettejohn (The Crown) will be portraying the lead roles in the adaptation, which will be released in episodic format.
Taking the premise to modern times, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows canceled star journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander as they investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vanger. Although the core premise of the story remains the same, there’s a specific reason why the David Fincher movie is getting a TV adaptation despite a 10/10 Craig movie.
Why is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Getting a TV Adaptation?

The David Fincher movie is simply… iconic. From a deliberate slow pace to the revelations and tightness in the script, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo received worldwide fame and critical acclaim.
However, a TV adaptation of the same story begs the question of the need for another adaptation that is not a movie. According to Deadline, it seems that the TV version will include the wider Vanger family (whose daughter went missing 30 years ago) and explore the family in more depth than the movies.
Of course, episodic formats allow the story to explore more freely and take its sweet time in ensuring the suspense stays up. Despite the happy moments, it would have been a great closure if the original movies could have finished with a trilogy.
Why Daniel Craig’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Couldn’t Finish Its Trilogy
Director David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo did find worldwide love and fame. However, the one thing it couldn’t earn was sufficient profit to sponsor the next film.
Against a budget of $90 million, the film earned a global total of $232 million (via IMDb). Putting in the marketing costs, the profits seemed to dwindle.
Naturally, Sony decided to take a pause and, unwilling to spend more on the same creative team, decided to bypass the next two books in Stieg Larsson’s original series. Instead, they hired a new director and cast to make a cheaper, more mainstream adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web in 2018 (which was a total dud, by the way).

Because David Fincher, Daniel Craig, and Rooney Mara decided to take up other projects, the three never reunited to finish the sequels or the trilogy, and hence, the world was left without Fincher’s take on Larsson’s iconic novels.
